The question ‘How was Toy Story made’ was posed on Quora and a very thoughtful and inspiring answer written by Craig L Good (Pixar camera artist) really struck a chord with me. It serves as a reminder to stop second guessing everything we do and to quit inhibiting our creativity with a you-can’t-do-that mentality.
My personal take on how we got Toy Story made is what I call the NASA theory. I grew up with the race to the moon. I remember every launch from John Glenn to Apollo XVII. The men who got us to the moon were my heroes. As an adult I looked back on the documentary footage and was shocked to notice how young they all were.
Then it hit me: We got to the moon because they were too young and stupid to know it was impossible. “Wanna go to the moon? OK, I guess we need a payload about like this, so we need motors that do that and about this much fuel and a bunch of stuff that does this. Go.”
Well after Toy Story I realized that’s exactly how we did it: We were too young and stupid to know it was impossible, so we just did it. “Ever made a feature film before? Nope. Me, neither. I guess we need some of this and a bunch of those. Go.”

Calvin and Hobbes perfectly explain inspiration and creativity. Especially relevant to those who work in advertising.
